Bruxelles Premiere | Viola Sylvestris Espresso | Thomas Gorbach | 2026 | 5’45 min. | stereo fixed media
Viola Sylvestris Espresso is a condensed new version of the original composition Viola Sylvestris (2015), commissioned by Gesäuse National Park and the contemporary art collection of Admont Abbey. Its source material consists of natural sounds recorded in the national park and the plant names documented in Father Gabriel Strobl’s collection. These materials have been transformed, layered and recomposed into an extract of the original work.
The new version concentrates the material into a dense sonic weave. Fragments of the Latin plant names from Father Strobl’s collection emerge intermittently as “botanical shadows”. The original observation of nature is transformed into a brief, intensely compressed sound form—an acousmatic espresso.
