Writing Classes on Acousmatic Music for Fixed Media

Discovering Your Own Compositional Voice

  • 6. October – 12. January 2027, 10:00 - 14:00
  • EchoScope – Studio for Sonic Illusion and Immersive Composition ,
    Fröbelgasse 30, 1160 Vienna
  • Language of instruction: English/French

How can individual sounds be shaped into a compelling musical form? How can sonic events be organized to create tension, direct attention, and develop a unique artistic expression?

This course introduces practical tools and compositional strategies for acousmatic composition. Starting from listening perception, sound materials, and media-based techniques, participants develop their own compositional language.

The course focuses on:

  • Energy models and play sequences for organizing musical gestures and forms
  • Sound montage techniques, including interpolation, incrustation, attack substitution, and the construction of composite sound objects
  • Layering techniques and methods for connecting sound layers, sequences, and formal developments
  • Transformations of sound in frequency, spectrum, amplitude, time, and space

These methods are presented not as rigid rules, but as creative tools for developing an individual artistic practice. They help composers structure sound material, shape formal relationships, and realize their musical ideas with greater precision and clarity.

The course is intended for composers, sound artists, and students who wish to deepen their engagement with sound and explore new approaches to musical creation. Its goal is to foster an individual compositional practice through the interaction of listening, imagination, and technological possibilities.
